STEP 1:
Gather your ingredients:
Green coffee beans,
a roasting pan or
metal drum,
heat-resistant gloves &
Choose a safe location for your fire.
STEP 2:
Start by building a fire pit,
Allow the fire to burn down to
embers or coals. Add your green coffee beans to your roasting pan and hold your roasting pan over the hot coals.
Make sure you are using heat resistant gloves, it might not be hot to begin with… just wait.
STEP 3:
If you’re using a roasting pan like me then just give your wrist a flick to keep the beans moving, ensuring an even roast.
Pay close attention to the colour and aroma of the beans, they will
change as they roast.
Once the beans reach your desired roast level remove the pan from above the fire and empty roasted beans from the pan ASAP!
STEP 4:
The job now is to cool the beans as fast as possible to prevent over roasting. Remember the lighter the roast, the more of the origin flavours can be tasted. Dark roasts make bitter flavours.
Allow the beans to cool completely before grinding. Taste your roasted coffee with friends, laugh at how badly your roast tastes and brew a fresh pot of “Cheeky Grinders Coffee” and be grateful that roasting over a fire is not your day job HAHA.
But in all seriousness it was fun right? And you probably learnt something. I encourage you to have another go, you might find a new and interesting roast profile.
Or at least a new story.
